Acrylic Painting Of Flowers

acrylic painting of flowers

Try your hand at acrylic painting of flowers today! Make beautiful pictures to hang on the wall or give to someone special as a gift. You will not only make their day but you will have lots of fun being creative.

I love painting. It lets my mind wander away from the rest of the world for a while. What’s really cool about it is that sometimes I look at my creations and go Wow! “That’s pretty”, and if it doesn’t look so good, who cares. Just cover it up, start over and see what else you can come up with.

Acrylic Painting Is Very Forgiving

Lots of times you can paint over your mistakes. If you make a mistake, and it’s still wet, try to rub some of the paint off with a rag or paper towel. Then use titanium white acrylic paint to cover your mistake and let it dry. Then you should be able to finish painting. If you’d like a more detailed way to fix a tough mistake that’s not cooperating with you you can check out the Tips and Tricks section.

It Helps To Draw A Rough Draft First

acrylic painting of flowers

It does help a little when you’re painting even the simplest flower painting on a landscape background to have a rough draft of how it will look even if it is just for the size and placement of them.

In this painting, I drew and painted the background first then let it dry and drew a few flowers on the canvas to help guide me. I included a bunch of pretty flower pictures below that you can use as guidelines or print out and transfer if you'd like.

Now For The Finishing Touches

For the flowers in this painting, I’m putting several shades of the color mixed with white onto the brush at the same time. Then I’m making short strokes spreading outwards on each petal which makes it look really natural. I like it a lot! Use a tiny fan brush and add a few pine trees in the background too if you like.

Below are some flower painting picture ideas to inspire you and to use as guidelines.

Easy Painting Ideas

Simply Easy Flowers To Paint

Painting a flower picture or adding flowers to your picture is just something we seem to naturally do as artists. They look very appealing and pretty. In this post I will be showing you how to make an acrylic painting of flowers that is so easy that even the newest beginners can enjoy being creative and have a beautiful picture to be proud of. I’ve also included some pictures of other easy painting ideas for you.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Your paint surface - I used an 8” x 10” canvas panel.

  • Assortment of paint - the colors I used were turquoise, blue, white, purple, and green.

  • Paint brushes - ¼” or ½” wide flat brush, a round or filbert size 1 or 2 brush, and a detail brush size 0/10

  • A bowl of water

  • Paper towels or a clean rag

  • A palette, preferably a wet palette - Click here to learn how to make your own.

Choose Pretty Colors

For this painting I’m using an 8” x 10” canvas board. You can use any surface you want. You can also use any colors you want. My colors are going to be a combination of turquoise, blue and white for the background, a combination of purple and white for the flowers, and green lightened a little with white for the leaves.

For The Background

Squeeze some of 2 - 3 colors (my choice was turquoise, blue and white) that work well together onto your palette. Using a ¼” or ½” wide flat brush, swirl the colors together but don’t completely mix them. See the picture. Dip your brush in your water and squeeze excess on the side of the bowl, then swipe the paint from top to bottom adding a bit more water when needed, to make a pretty background that’s not a completely solid color.

The Rough Draft Of The Tulips

Now using your flower colors with a smaller round or filbert brush size 1 or 2 turn your painting upside down, swirl the colors and make believe you’re drawing bells. Make 4 bells and 1 bulb. Try to make the colors not mixed giving a variegated effect. See the picture.

Define The Flowers

Next you want to use a small detail brush size 0/10 to put some definition with the darker purple color into the flowers like the picture.

Add Stems And Leaves

Add the stems, using a mixture of green and a bit of white with your size 1 or 2 round or filbert brush. Make them a little bit curved so they look natural. And finally add some leaves.

Choosing Your Subject

Painting is all about expressing yourself. Creating a picture of what's going on in your mind, and allowing others to see what you are feeling. It doesn't matter what your subject is as long as you are comfortable painting it. Some of the better subjects are those that offer color and contrast. It should be something interesting but not too much activity. By taking a picture or looking at pictures, you get ideas on what you want to paint and you will see the contrast, lighting and textures to use as your guideline. If you have an idea in your head, you might want to draw it first before you paint. This way you have a guideline to go by or transfer onto your paint surface. As long as you're creating and having fun, that's what it's all about.

Painting Picture Ideas

I've gathered together a few painting picture ideas for you to use as models for the subjects of your paintings. You can also take your own pictures or search the internet on any subject you want. Use your smart phone to take pictures when you see something really cool that you might want to paint later. By taking a picture or looking at pictures you can get ideas on what you want to paint. You will see the contrast, lighting, and textures. It's hard to paint a picture of something that's moving and then you have the advantage of painting your picture at your leisure.

Use your imagination and add to the pictures or change them in any way that you want. For example: You can use a beach scene for the background and then use a picture of your dog, cat or any animal and put it on your beach scene. Another example would be: Paint an abstract background and have flowers or trees as your subject.  Birds also make nice subjects to paint. The possibilities are endless.

The pictures are divided into categories to make it easier for you to find your subject. Just click on the link under the picture of your choice.
