See how the water shines with this added technique in the sunset over the ocean painting. Below you will find step by step instructions along with a download of the template of this painting. I hope you have fun with your painting. I had lots of fun painting mine. I look forward to hearing from you on how your painting came out. Materials:

8x10 stretched canvas

Wet Palette - see How To Make A Wet Palette

Assortment of Acrylic Paint (red, yellow, blue, white, brown, green)

Liquitex Professional Glazing Fluid Medium

Paint Brush Assortment (#6 flat, #2 flat, #2 round, #1 round, #0 detail)

Bowl of water

Paper towels or a rag

Fine Spray Mist Bottle of water

Graphite Paper

Pencil

Start With The Bright Sunset Background

Set your wet palette up with some red and yellow acrylic paint. Spray a fine mist of water over your canvas for easier blending of the colors. Using a fairly wide #6 or #8 flat brush slightly mix the paint and starting with the darkest red/orange color at the top swiping your brush horizontally from side to side blend it to about midway down the picture finishing with a yellow/orange color. Retain a little of the yellow for future use of painting the sun and sun’s reflection. Clean your brush in the bowl of water and dry it with a paper towel of a rag if you have one.

Moving On To The Sand In The Foreground

Now add a bit of brown acrylic paint to white acrylic paint on your wet palette. Mix it to make a light tan color for the sand. Using your #6 or #8 flat brush, paint in some sand at the bottom of the canvas about an inch or so wide. Clean and dry your brush.

Complete The Background With Blue Water

Next put some blue and a bit of white acrylic paint on your wet palette. Using the #6 or #8 flat brush slightly mix it so the water doesn’t look like a solid color. Spray a fine mist of water on your canvas for easier blending of the water and swiping your brush horizontally from side to side paint in the water down to the sand area making a wavy bottom (see the picture). Clean your brush and let the background completely dry.

Now For The Sun And It’s Reflection

Using a #2 flat brush and the yellow acrylic paint you have reserved on your wet palette, paint a half circle for the sun about 2½ inches in from the right side on top of the water horizon. Then refer to the picture and in a side to side swiping motion, with yellow, paint the reflection of the sun on the water. Clean your brush and let the painting completely dry.

Add The Glazing Paint Technique

Squeeze some Liquitex Professional Glazing Fluid Medium onto your wet palette. Using a #2 flat brush swiping from side to side horizontally apply the glazing fluid onto the water to give it a shiny glistening impact. Clean your brush and let your painting completely dry.

Finish Off With A Palm Tree, Hills And Grass

You may download the template here: >Download< and transfer it to your painting using graphite paper for the tree, hills and grass. Or if you prefer, you can paint them in freehand. Use a #2 round brush and brown acrylic paint for the hills, tree trunk and coconuts. Add a bit of a white to the brown making a tan color for highlighting. Use a #0 detail brush to highlight the tree trunk, coconuts and hills. Use a #1 round brush with dark green acrylic paint for the palm tree leaves and grass. Add a touch of yellow to the green for the highlights using a #0 detail brush.

Voila!

Now you have a beautiful sunset over the ocean painting and have used a glazing paint technique to enhance your painting.
