I always like the rustic look of the natural wood slices for painting pictures on. There's something about it that makes it look sort of cozy and countryish. My Daughter's birthday is coming up on September 2nd and she just loves to get something handmade from Mom. This is the perfect gift idea. Of course I will get her a few other things but she will love this. That's her in the moon reaching for the stars. In this post, I'll be showing you how to make a painting with a quote just like this. I'll include a download of the picture for you to use as a template. I'll also be using my new Molotow Paint Marker and including instructions for refilling it.
Materials needed:
Oval Natural Wood Slice 9" X 12"
Gesso Primer (optional) Please note if you do not use a couple coats of primer then the wood will soak up your paint and you will need extra coats of paint.
Assorted colors of acrylic paints - see Best Acrylic Paint
Paint Brushes - see Best Brushes
Template Download
Acrylic Sealant
Saw Tooth Picture Hanger
Palette, preferably a Wet Palette
Bowl of water
Paper towel or an old rag
Graphite Paper
Pencil
Molotow 127HS ONE4ALL Acrylic Paint Marker, Signal Black, 1 mm tip
Step By Step Instructions Make It Easy For You
The very first thing you are going to want to do is prime the wood with 2 coats of Gesso primer. You can use clear or white. Make sure to let it completely dry in between coats. This step is optional but be prepared to use more paint if you don't prime it because the wood will soak up a lot of the paint.
Next download the template. Using your graphite paper, transfer only the background to the wood slice.
Now paint the background. Use 2 coats if you decided not to prime the wood first. Let the coats completely dry in between.
Transfer the rest of the template onto the background.
Now comes the real fun! Use your imagination. It doesn't have to look exactly like mine. Paint the moon and stars with titanium white.
You may want the lady in the moon to have a blue, purple, pink or red dress. It's your choice. You could also have a man in the moon!
Think of a pretty color for the flowers. Purple is my favorite color, that's why I chose to have purple flowers.
Let it dry completely before writing the quote with your paint marker.
Once that's completely dry, personalize the back with a special message to the person you are going to give it to. See my example but make yours accordingly.
Once it's all done and dry, start with the back side and give it a couple of coats of sealant. Making sure each coat is dry in between. Spray it on very thin with sweeping coats. Then do the same for the front.
The last step is to measure a spot in the middle of the upper top back side of the wood and put the saw tooth picture hanger there. My wood was soft enough that I could just press it on there with my fingers. You might need a hammer but go gently so you don't ruin your beautiful project.
Refilling Your Paint Marker
You might want to put on some rubber gloves if you have them and protect the surface of the table with a piece of plastic.
Holding the marker upright, take the cap off and unscrew the marker head.
Pull out the nib unless it stayed intact with the marker head.
Using a sharp blade like a razor knife, go down to the second little ring and remove the whole cartridge.
If you loosen the first ring, there’s a spring that will pop out and make a big mess. So be careful.
Using the Molotow Acrylic Refill, you can now pour it into the marker.
Then replace the cartridge, nib and cap.
