Painted Box Ideas

Hand painted boxes using acrylic paint can make admirable keepsakes and is a thrifty way to make something special out of things you already have on hand. Add color and beauty to things that would otherwise be uninteresting. Let your imagination run away with you and see what you can create. When I have paint left on my palette after finishing a painting, I look for things to use up the extra paint with so I don’t waste it. I find myself painting my craft supply storage boxes to make them look pretty. Then when I’ve painted all of them, I come up with new painted box ideas. Next thing you know, I’m adding more paint to the palette because I’m creating all sorts of attractive things.

Painted Cigar Boxes

If you know a cigar aficionado, you may find that he always has a lot of cool wooden cigar boxes that they ship these cigars in. These make perfect little storage boxes for craft supplies, jewelry, cosmetics and more. I decided to start painting on some of these cool boxes. I made my daughter a little keepsake box that I think came out really nice, and colorful. I’m sure she will like it, especially the message inside.

Painted Plastic Storage Bins

Another great idea is painting plastic storage bins with acrylic paint for your craft supplies or anything else you want to store. First clean your box with dish liquid and water. Use rubbing alcohol on a cloth to wipe down the entire surface. Rough up the surface with some fine grit sandpaper and prime it with plastic primer. Now you’re ready to paint it. Use a sealant if you want for added protection. Now your storage bins look pretty!

Painting Your Mailbox

Why would you want a boring old mailbox when you could have a bright and colorful one? Clean it first, then rough it up a little with fine grit sandpaper. Cover the flag if you don’t plan to paint it. Give it a couple coats of metal primer to make sure the paint sticks to it. Rust-Oleum Universal Bonding Primer works great on metal. Now you can start painting your mailbox using acrylic paints. You’ll need a second coat after the first one is dry and maybe even a third coat. Spread each coat on thin, rather than thick. You can also use stencils or free-hand paint the numbers on. After it’s dry be sure to use a sealant for added protection. Add mailbox adhesive numbers when it’s fully dry, if you haven’t already painted them on.

The Hope Chest

When the girl leaves the nest of her home the hope chest goes with her as a valuable possession that she has collected since she was very young. Adding color and beauty with acrylic paint to this chest will make it a gorgeous piece of furniture to add charm to her new surroundings.

Use Your Imagination

There are many different ideas you can come up with when you think about what to paint on with acrylics. A few more painted box ideas are, toy boxes, flower boxes, sand boxes, jewelry boxes, hat boxes, cake and cookie tins, and wooden crates. I’d like to hear some of your ideas too! Please leave them in the comments section below. Check back with me, I have more acrylic painting ideas coming soon!
